Arrangement of new furniture and technology in FLEX YU BC (October 2023)

FLEX YU

FLEX YU is our cross-country classroom (re)design initiative that centred student and faculty voices in inspiring lasting changes in the culture of teaching across our institution and that yielded the launch and introduction of numerous new active learning spaces at our on-site Ontario campus (Steeles) and at our on-site BC campus (New Westminster). CTEI hosts FLEX YU training sessions throughout the year at either campus to support active and collaborative teaching approaches in these FLEX YU classrooms with new furniture and updated technologies supporting more flexible learning by enabling faculty and students to reconfigure the spaces to collaborate and share ideas in more creative ways.

FLEX YU training takes place over two half days on-site on campus, and over the course of the training, faculty participants will:

  • discuss the principles and benefits of active learning in a flexible classroom environment;
  • develop strategies to set positive classroom expectations, facilitate effective group work, and address classroom management issues in the flexible learning space;
  • build confidence and familiarity with the room and its features by experimenting with the furniture layouts and technologies;
  • create lesson plans for your own courses that integrate active learning strategies and make use of the resources available in the flexible classroom; and
  • reflect on your experience of teaching in this space, gather input from your learners, and share your insights through our structured evaluation process.

FLEX YU training will be valuable for all faculty, whether or not you will be teaching in one of renovated spaces in a coming term. If you are interested in joining a future FLEX YU training session, please e-mail The Centre at ctei@yorkvilleu.ca
